20th century heritage: Quai Gambetta apartment blocks

Map

The four tall modern blocks on the Quai Gambetta symbolise the reconstruction of Boulogne following the devastation of the city during World War II. Architect Pierre Vivien conceived the buildings which were built from 1951-1955. Vivien was the man in charge of the wholesale rebuilding of the ruined port city. The towers are 40 meters high and distinguished by colours used on the facades.
Their oblique alignment was carefully studied to gain maximum sunshine, protection from dominant winds and to offer best views over the sea. Located prominently facing the harbour they affirm the intention to build a modern city out of the ruins. They received a prize recognizing their contribution to 20
th century cultural heritage by the French Culture Ministry in 2009.
